I dedicate this poem to my First Expert

*

For the first time when we met,
I warmly slept while you softly wept,
‘It is a Girl child’, they said but you wore a smile of poise even in the pain,
And there you taught me true love, warmth and vain.

*

To swallowing, to gulping, to chewing to biting,
It was you who took me through all the stages of eating,
I crawled, I walked, I jumped, I fell, I got up again and I ran,
Only when you made me believe ‘I could and I always can’

*

I remember my first brush with colors,
You prepared me with the paper, the palette and an artist’s valor,
And soon I won my first art competition,
You were super happy but you said let not your paintings wait for the prize or for any season.

*

Adolescence was tough and highly confusing,
You reiterated ‘move with the flow’ but I kept refusing,
I shouted, I argued, I leered, I sneered and I cried,
You held my hand, hugged me tight, wiped my tears, heard my talk and everyday tried.

*

When I declared, I wanted to have my own life,
You said, I must hurry up because soon it would be time to be a wife,
The people around judged me now and then and were always leveraging,
But it was you who showed me the path and always talked encouraging.

*

In my marriage whenever I have had testing times and frays,
As an expert you have always helped me to sail through by reminding of the sunny days,
I can never cook in your taste and splendid style,
Thus, you never forget to give me your home-made masalas to adorn my cooking file.

*

Mum, you are a friend, you are a sibling, you are a parent, you are a teacher, you are lot more than one,
Skillfully you play many roles and beautify my life like none,
In trouble or in pain, In sun or in rain, In loss or in Gain,
I know I have an expert, a reflection of God in clothes simple and plain.

  1. You’ve packed the entirety of womanhood in a single poem 🙂 Admire the ease in the flow of your words!

    1. Thank u so much Nandhuni for this heartfelt comment… when I was penning it down, I always had in mind that it must revolve around strengths of womanhood.
