Kuala Lumpur Bird Park (Malay: Taman Burung Kuala Lumpur)
If you are in Kuala Lumpur with or without children, the KL bird park is a must visit. From African Grey Parrot, Yellow-billed Stork, Silver Pheasant, Red Lory, Indian Blue Peafowl, Straw-headed Bulbul, Flamingos, Hornbills, Waterhens, Parrots, Cockatoos, Storks, Pheasants, Mynahs, Pigeons, Macaws. Ducks one gets to see them all and many more. I didn’t even know so many unique species of birds existed before visiting this place. It was an awesome learning experience. For me, it was a unique as well as a fulfilling experience. It made me nostalgic about the childhood days when my parents took me around in the zoo. It was similar to spotting animals. Here too some of the birds moved around in the open in their segmented and separated spaces while there were others which were caged.
If you are a bird lover, you will find it a paradise and make the best of the day in the KL Bird Park. At the entrance, one buys a ticket and gets wrist-let. It guarantees your journey inside where you can spot different varieties of birds from the smallest to the tallest. The colorful sight amidst the green spread is all the more heartening when the birds walk down close to you. The Park has been designed in a way that it is covered from the above and many birds move and fly around freely in the semi-natural environment.
Taman Burung Kuala Lumpur
“The World’s Largest Covered Bird Park” or “The World’s largest Free Flight Aviary”.
You got to be awed by the soaring storks, flamingos and huge emus. I never knew the birds were brilliant posers. They gave us some fantastic shots in the landscaped surroundings. I experienced Nature at its best again. However, as a caution one should not do anything that irks the birds.
3,000 birds and 200 species from all over the world.
KL Bird Park, World’s Largest Free flight Walk in Aviary was officially opened in 1991. Located with the serene and scenic Kuala Lumpur Lake Gardens, it is only 10 minutes away from the Kuala Lumpur city center. The land sprawls over 21 acres and the park is divided into 4 different zones. The enthralling sights of birds one after the other, the lush tropical gardens gives a relief from the maddening rush of the city. Its peaceful and soothing to mind and body.
When we moved from One Zone to another.
The green expanse is lavish. Its a long and delightful walk on the road. On both sides of the pathway there are huge trees to give a forest like atmosphere to the birds. The distinguishing feature about KL Bird Park is its concept of free flight. The stretch of the park is covered by a wire netting secured at some 300 feet height, thus enabling the birds to fly at free will. I quite liked its concept of bringing nature close to humans. It has a handicap friendly pathway too. There are two kiosks named after birds. I spotted Parrot kiosk but missed out on the Flamingo Kiosk. Once can feed the birds too. People were enjoying feeding the lorries. The cute and beautiful birds seemed most human friendly. A bird show also happens here regularly at fixed timings.
Things that will attract children are:
A Flamingo pond, Pelicans, Hornbill Park, World of Parrots, a Waterfall Aviary, Amphitheatre, Children’s playground and Seminar Room.
My personal favorite was the waterfall area.
There is a Bird Gallery in the park where one can collect information as to how the birds incubate and breed. Their hatching periods are mentioned and the whole cycle of incubation is explained. The Photo-booth is another very interesting idea where you can actually have too many birds sit on your head and pose with you for a feather-ful picture. It was priced at some riggits and I was not keen on going for this paid thing. There is a kiosk close to the Photo-Booth and its named after the Parrots. One can buy some knick knacks to keep full. The Bird aviaries were separated by zones and each Zone had a proper lock-gate. When you exit, you enter into a Peacock Gift shop which offers interesting items to take home memories from the bird park.
There is more to the bird watching experience there inside the Hornbill Park of KL Bird Park. Once you are exhausted covering the green spread end to end there awaits a Hornbill Restaurant and Cafe, a dining experience that you can have with the Hornbill bird. I loved its unique architecture. The eatery concept is housed inside a wooden Malay Kampung like house. The interiors are interesting and one of its kind. The restaurant offers a wide variety of local and western cuisines. The palette was quite interesting here though we preferred to quench our thirst with cold coconut water and did not order anything to eat.
KL bird park is a favorite with photographers. The colorful and fascinating birds are bound to get you playing with your camera and one group photograph is a must at the Hornbill Restaurant. Be great posers like us as below.

This post is part of Malaysia feature series that I am doing on my blog because recently I attended my first FAM trip with Malaysia Tourism. Vashakhi in blue and Ragini in check shirt above were other two travel bloggers who accompanied me. We had a great time together and Malaysia Tourism was indeed a great host.
Happy Traveling!!
Awesome. What a great opportunity to travel. Those birds look great and I love your group photo 🙂
2 hours of awesomeness and the bird watching from the cafe was one of the best moments! Btw the waterfall area was my favorite area too 😀
