An Epicurean Journey: Awadhi Dum style and Punjabi Tadka.

If you were to host a weekend party for your friends or family, how would you do it?

This is the theme for the contest organised by Kitchens of India and Indiblogger

I have been born and brought up in Lucknow and have lived there for first thirteen years of my life. And later, for the other half of my life, we have been comfortably settled in Delhi. But though we lived in the cosmopolitan culture, my Mum never gave up on her inherent Awadhi style of cooking. Thus, I have grown on it and have always loved the Lucknawi elaborate dishes. In fact I love the dum-style, the art of cooking over slow fire as the bawarchis and rakabdars of Awadh gave birth to.

That was the first part of the story. Now, I am an year old newly-wedded one 🙂  into a Punjabi family. The cooking style and the favorite cuisines of my new home are quite contrary to what I have been used to all along. The specialties and food-menu is different here.  I have a life-long, evergreen fascination for the Yellow dal (Arhar) and my husband loves to dig in Tadka Dal. So I guess you can judge my predicament.

THEME: FAMILY DAY

Last few months have been very hectic for me and my hubby, however there have been some good developments in our life too. Both of us have got promoted in our respective organisations. M has won a few foreign assignments in his business profile and I have won a few blogging contests apart from my daily grind at work, thus a party is on the cards. I plan to theme it as a Family Dining Day, wherein I plan to invite our parents and relatives of both sides. This one is going to be a challenge for me to inter-meddle the melting pots of two different cultures, and also it is my first chance to impress the two Moms, who are connoisseurs of food.

PLAN FOR THE DAY

The soul of my party would be food, music and ambiance.

I would create a music playlist that would be ready to begin as soon as the doorbell rings.  It would be a collection of light and instrumental music.

I will decorate my house with an interesting theme and set a beautiful and relishing dinner table. Usually, when I am travelling around, I often click pictures of the interior-decor or art that impresses me and thus I wish to use it for my upcoming theme party. I would decorate my drawing room and dining room lavishly keeping the colors soft and serene. The below pictures would give a peek into my imagination.

FOOD AND DRINKS

I plan to offer starters from around the world however Punjabi dal makhni, paneer makhni and Awadhi specialties like chicken and mutton biryani will top the menu-chart. And I am going to use the most authentic and tasteful spices from the spread-over of Kitchens of India. Thus I wish to impress both my vegetarian and non-vegetarian guests with some great food cooked by using the spices of Kitchens of India.

SNACKY PLATTER SOUP TASTY AND SINGLE BITES

There will be some Paneer Malai, Mirch ka Salan, Dal Bukhara and Paneer Makhani. On the non-veg platter, there would be the most authentic Butter Chicken and Mutton Biryani.

Meat, cheese and vegetables will be served with some well done Rotis and Ulta Tawa parathas and the sumptuous Mutton Biryani and Vegetable Biryani Mix.
