For quite some time, I have been reading similar genres, romance and humor and needed something interesting. Thanks to Hemant Kumar for sending his book and I got my much needed break.
The blurb arouses curiosity, the cover page conveys much beyond violence and blood and all in all the book is completely enthralling. Its unputdownable. The story moves along beautifully, its gripping and one feels as if it happened just yesterday though the year and time is unlike today. A two day story, keeps us on toes and makes us go through myriad of emotions.
Set in eastern India, alongside the river Ganges, the story paints a picture of early independence days. It is the year 1948, and zamidari system is still not eradicated from this part of the country. Our place of attraction are called Janakganj and Narainpur. The story begins on a cold note when Ravi, an artist is murdered brutally and he dies in the lap of his best friend, Shambhu. The dying body and its pain has been described adeptly with the choicest of words and it paints the real picture before the eyes of the reader. One feels emotionally drained and feels a strong urge to read further.
The death of Ravi comes as a big blow for Shambhu because the bond between them was beyond words and he is shocked and sorrowful. Though he knows that Ravi had set out to do something very risky and had ended dead but now to avenge his cold blooded murder,he decides to carry forward the incomplete task of his best friend. He resolves to find out the culprit and know reasons for inflicting, height of pain to his best friend. Fear and violence is in the air but strong will power and anger keeps this young man go on along the path of unknown, cruel and ruthless bloodshed. He travels to Janakganj and Narainpur and has deadly confrontation with the cruel Thakur Gajanan. Dhibri and Hariya help him to go ahead with the selfless act as everyone wishes for the end of dictatorship.
Rajni, wife of Gajanan Singh comes out to be a strong character who acts with strength and patience. She uses her mind and power to help Shambhu escape and later confront the Thakur. The rivalry between Gajanan and Suraj Singh is rife and adds to the twist and turn in the story. A girl of sixteen, Etwari, plays a bold character who helps to bring cruelty to an end. It is a story that has all emotions of love, lust, betrayal, violence, rage etc and a blend of all makes a strong story which touches the human chord.
Hats off to Hemant Kumar, who has beautifully portrayed a story so fulfilling. He has had this story for ever in his heart and now when its turned into a book, its marvellously done.
